Twenty-One

I was ready to cuddle with Littlebit and plan surveillance on the coven members I knew how to find, older women who didn’t care for technology and didn’t notice it when it was right under their noses.

The parking lot was empty, but for a couple of covered motorcycles and the torn apart hot rod, Niall had been meaning to start fixing for months. I parked nearest the back door and started for the fire-stairs out of habit.

It wasn’t until I let heavy steel door fall shut behind me, that I remembered there was no half-crazed she-wolf hunting me anymore. I could take the elevator again, walk out the front door any time of day, even get my mail without acting like it was a S.E.A.L. mission.

I took the hall that led to the foyer and the elevators and immediately regretted the decision. There, flanked by Niall and Gray, was Portia, her face a mosaic of purple and green from old and new beatings. I knew the pattern, I'd seen those marks at least half a dozen times in the mirror, growing up.

“Hey guys, how did you know I’d meet you here?”

Niall coughed and glanced away, and Gray sighed. “I had a feeling it would occur to you that you don’t have to sneak around anymore.” I flinched, but he held up his hands in surrender. “There’s no accusation there, Honey. Just truth. You won a challenge you didn’t even want to fight. The wolves who helped Lola cheat are being punished as we speak.”

“Then we won’t keep you. I know what it means to be punished by the alpha. The anticipation’s worse than the beatdown.” I sighed at my aunt. “Come on, Aunty. There’s someone you should meet. I’ll get a poultice for your face, too.”

Niall and Gray fell in step behind us like an honor guard, silent but watchful. Portia hadn't said a word in the entire short conversation between Gray and me, so silence continued all the way to my apartment, where Littlebit bounded to the door to meet us, chirping and yapping at Portia when she stepped out from behind me.

“Sorry, Baby, I didn’t mean to surprise you.” I picked her up and rubbed my cheek against her little face. “Aunt Portia, this is Littlebit, the newest addition to my family. She’s a rescue.” Gray and Niall sat at the dining room table, giving us the illusion of privacy, but they needn’t have bothered. Portia had stopped noticing them as soon as I arrived, arrogantly assuming they were beneath her.

Portia held out her hands for the kit, who grumbled her annoyance as I reluctantly handed her over. “Oh, she doesn’t like me at all, does she?”

“She’s Fae, Aunt. Perhaps she’s getting a sense of how you feel about us.”

She flinched at ‘us’ but pretended there was nothing to my accusation. “Nonsense. I have no ‘feelings’ about the Fae that would upset her. She’s simply responding to your emotional cues. Baby’s are all love and no brain, aren’t
